Ransomware Attack on PIH Hospital

On the first of December this year, PIH Health, a Californian healthcare provider, experienced a significant ransomware attack that compromised its computer and phone systems across multiple locations, including PIH Health Downey Hospital, PIH Health Good Samaritan Hospital, and PIH Health Whittier Hospital. The attack also affected urgent care centers, doctors' offices, and home health and hospice services.

The hacking group behind the ransomware attack on the Californian healthcare provider PIH Health on December 1, claims to have stolen a huge amount of sensitive data to the hackers hard drives, before encrypting files. If the hackers are to be believed, they now have over 17 million patient records.

The hackers claimed to have stolen around 2 terabytes of sensitive data, including 17 million patient records, personal and medical information, home addresses, phone numbers, places of employment, medical expenses, confidential diagnoses, test results, patient photos, scans, and private emails between patients and PIH Health about treatments and test results. The breach has caused major disruptions, with some medical procedures and surgeries being canceled due to ongoing technology issues.

PIH Health has been working with cyber forensic specialists and the FBI to investigate the incident and restore its systems. The organization has increased staffing to handle the high volume of phone calls and is using downtime procedures to continue providing care to patients. Impacted individuals will be notified if their protected health information is found to be compromised.

Liverpool Hospital Ransomware Attack

In a chain of sophisticated Ransomware attacks aimed at healthcare systems, the Attackers stole patient records, donor reports, procurement data, and more. Alder Hey Children's NHS Foundation Trust confirmed that it, along with the Liverpool Heart and Chest Hospital and Royal Liverpool University Hospital, had been impacted by a data breach on Thursday, November 28th. Furthermore, the trust explained that the breach was the result of “a single cyber attack that has impacted three NHS organisations”. The NHS supply chain is broken. Too many suppliers are wilfully ignoring cybersecurity compliance standards and are a gateway for attacks against NHS trusts.
